European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee Adopts Draft Report on EU Sanctions

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament has today adopted the first draft of a report by Kristiina Ojuland MEP (Estonia, ALDE) on EU sanctions against those involved in the Magnitsky case.

The report seeks to not only establish common visa restrictions for Russian officials involved in the Sergei Magnitsky case but also “encourages the Council to take a coherent and proactive stance on other serious human rights violations in Russia, on the basis of well documented, converging and independent sources, and to introduce similar restrictive measures against offenders”

The report is now open for amendments until 29 August 2012 at 12.00 after which it will then be considered on 19-20 September 2012 in the Foreign Affairs Committee and will be put before the full plenary session for a vote on 22-26 October 2012 in Strasbourg.
