The following is a statement from Mikhail Khodorkovsky regarding the recent passing of German Parliamentarian Andreas Schockenhoff.

With great sadness and dismay I learned of Andreas Schockenhoff’s death. Andreas Schockenhoff was a passionate, empathetic politician who supported the civil society and opposition in Russia with all his efforts. It was his firm belief that only a democratic and modern Russia governed by rule of law standards can be a partner for Europe. For this he fought tirelessly also against resistance.

Personally I am deeply grateful that he campaigned for my release for many years with stamina and passion. I am very glad that I was given the opportunity to thank him in person.

Andreas Schockenhoff’s death is a great loss for his family, friends, colleagues and also the Russian people. Our sympathy goes to his family. May he rest in peace.
