August 7, 2012

Former Yukos Deputy Executive Officer Alexey Kurtsin has just been released on parole after serving almost 8 years in prison. According to Kurtsin’s attorney Roman Golovtsev, the Ryazansky District Court passed the ruling today.

Kurtsin was arrested in November 2004, accused by the investigators of laundering almost half a billion roubles of Yukos’ funds. As a result Kurtsin was sentenced to 15 and a half years in prison, but in 2010 due to the liberalization of the law, the sentence was reduced to 12 and a half years.

The former Deputy Executive had applied for parole at the start of the year.

Kurtsin’s lawyer Yury Larin said simply “I’m glad Kurtsin has been released”.
