Khodorkovsky Donates ECHR Award to Charities in Russia

July 4, 2012

Following the European Court of Human Rights decision in May 2011, in which Russia was ordered to pay € 24,543, Khodorkovsky has donated the money to Olga Romanova’s group Russia Behind Bars, Chulpan Khamatova’s charity Gift of Life for children suffering from cancer, founded in 2006, and to the Podmoskovny Lyceum-boarding school he founded in 1994.
Olga Romanova, a prominent journalist and a leader of the group Russia Behind Bars, wrote on her Facebook page: “Thank you. I don’t know what else to say – I know I should, but can’t think of anything that doesn’t sound silly. Here I will be reporting how the money is being spent. The funds will be targeted on a specific assistance.”
The lawsuit in question is related to Khodorkovsky’s first appeal to the ECHR in 2004, which was partially granted on the 31st May 2011. Russia was instructed to pay Khodorkovsky € 24,543. As soon as the Strasbourg Court handed down its decision, Khodorkovsky announced he would give the award to charity.
