#PAPERBOEING in memory of the MH17 flight victims

#PAPERBOEING

On July 17, the anniversary of the deaths of the passengers and crew of flight MH17, shot down by a rocket en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, Open Russia will be holding an international rally – #PAPERBOEING – to commemorate the victims.

On that day we will not be seeking out the perpetrators or indicting anyone. We’re offering people the chance to honour the memory of each of the 298 innocent civilians – men, women, children, peaceful citizens of various countries – whose lives were cruelly cut short exactly a year ago.

We’ve put together a list of all the people on board the plane, alongside photographs of almost all of them, which you can find here. We’re going to attempt, in collaboration with experts, to reconstruct the day’s events, from the moment of MH17’s departure from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to the moment it crashed near the village of Grabovo in Ukraine’s Donetsk Region.

Open Russia invites you to take part in a symbolic rally on the seventeenth of this month. Just pick a portrait of a passenger or crewmember from the list on the website, print out the paper aeroplane template provided (this will feature the name of the person you’ve chosen), and make the plane as instructed.

On July 17 at 13:20 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), 16:20 Kiev time, or 17:20 Moscow time – a year to the hour after the tragedy – bring your paper aeroplane to the Dutch embassy in Moscow (the disaster’s victims were predominantly Dutch), or, if you’re abroad, go to your country’s Russian embassy.

On his personal Facebook page Mikhail Khodorkovsky commented on commemorating the victims of the MH17 flight:

“The truth about the Boeing crash will shortly become known to the world. The team of international experts will provide a “final paper”, and no tribunals can add anything to its legitimacy. The court, working under the auspices of the United Nations, is now necessary solely for the punishment of the perpetrators. Directing all diplomatic efforts to stand in the tribunal’s way is a politically useless action, which, moreover, can look like self-incrimination.

Unfortunately, even the most just tribunal will not return the victims.

All we can do is to honour their memory on July 17 https://www.facebook.com/events/471489866354414/
