Mikhail Khodorkovsky: This is an Attack on Everyone’s Right to Freedom of Information

December 12, 2017

The representatives of the criminal group currently occupying the Kremlin have, hiding beneath the guise of the Attorney General’s office, acted to block the following websites: Open Russia, ‘After Putin’. khodorkovsky.ru, Open Rights, The Open Russia Movement and Open University.

These criminals are using the authority of the Attorney General’s department to shut down the websites of ‘undesirable’ foreign organisations.

At the same time they know full-well that no such ‘foreign organisations’ under the given names exist, and that the ‘undesirable’ foreign organisations (with completely different names) do not have any connection at all to the blocked websites.

The real scandal here is the misuse of a public office in order to please the leadership of a criminal organisation.  Not only is this a violation of the Constitutional right to freedom of speech, but also a criminal offence against the misuse of government office.

We will be demanding that the Russian judiciary restore our violated rights while punishing the criminals, however we do not count on justice being delivered by a judicial system in the grip of a mafia clan.

I call on foreign law enforcement agencies who are in contact with the representatives of the Russian Attorney General’s office to recognise that in reality this office is occupied by a criminal organisation.  Not only is this organisation directly involved in corruption; not only does it cover up for violations of human rights, it is itself a gross abuser of human rights, in particular the right to freedom of speech.

I call on public organisations of democratic countries who are concerned with violations of fundamental rights and freedoms in Russia to support our appeals to law enforcement agencies across the world as well as parliamentary groups responsible for international legal cooperation, asking them to reconsider their relations with the Attorney General of the Russian Federation.

We will continue our work and will publish materials through social media and through my own personal (as a citizen of the Russian Federation) domains.

I appeal to Russian citizens, regardless of whether they agree or disagree with the editorial stance of the blocked websites: this is an assault on the rights of each and every one of you to freedom of information.  Please support the blocked websites on social media by liking and sharing.
