Protest Art in Russia’s Yekaterinburg

March 18, 2014

An unusual piece of street art has appeared in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg in front of Sverdlovsk Regional Court.  Hanging on a concrete wall facing the court is a portrait of the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, made from barbed wire taken from a prison colony in Segezha – the place where Mikhail Khodorkovsky served the later part of his sentence.

According to the artist, who preferred to remain anonymous, the artwork is a protest against political prosecution in Russia, explaining: “This work is in support of the Bolotnaya Case defendants, the prominent opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who is illegally detained under house arrest, and others.”
